Bowling Green Parks and Recreation

Bowling Green Parks and Recreation department provides a range of  recreational settings for everyone. There are countless programs and activities to get outside and get active with youth and adult sports, golfing, an award-winning Water Park, Community Center, parks and nature preserves, and much more!

Throughout the year, the department organizes many programs, like nature hikes, brown bag music series, picnics in the park, volunteer programs, gardening activities, and fitness classes to name a few.
They also host annual events for families and adults, including the Egg Scramble (an egg hunt held at night for adults), Health & Fitness Day, Couch Potato 5K, Father Daughter Dance and Pint-Sized Prom, and Monarchs are Marvelous. During the annual Winterfest, they organize the BG Chili & Soup Cook-Off, Frost Bite Fun Run and Snow Games for kids, all held in City Park.

City Park is a great location to take the family for a day of fun in the community. The park is the site of their award-winning water-park, with slides, a lazy river, splash pads and more. Additionally, the park houses two excellent playgrounds (one for four and under and another for ages five to twelve) with top-of-the-line equipment. Multiple rental facilities are located in the park, including four community shelters, two buildings and an outdoor stage. Also in the park, is a roller hockey rink, basketball courts, a baseball field, and their newly added skate park. Near the park, you'll find the Bowling Green Country Club, a beautiful nine-hole golf course. Simpson Garden Park is a free sculpture and botanical park with ten themed gardens, like the Children's Healing & Sensory Garden, Hosta Garden, Japanese Garden and a nationally recognized Day-lily walk. This is a gorgeous area for family outings, a peaceful meditation, even a leisurely stroll. The park features plants that grow in our local climate, and offers classes and volunteer opportunities to educate visitors about the plants. Simpson Garden Park is a must see in Bowling Green!

Carter Park is a great space for locals and visitors alike. Located just off I-75, it offers many opportunities for sports and activities, with an 18-hole Frisbee golf (or "frolf") course, sand volleyball courts and baseball and softball fields. There are wide open spaces to play catch, fly kites, have picnics and more. For families and young children, there are two playgrounds and shelter houses available for rent, so get out and enjoy!

Wintergarden/St. John's Nature Preserve Become one with nature as you wonder through the trails, forests, wetlands and breathtaking scenery. The preserve has the Rotary Nature Center, with an interactive learning room, a picture window on wildlife, and a fantastic bird room. Wintergarden offers dynamic programming, Nature Walks and events throughout the year. There is a lovely pond where visitors can witness wildlife, like the transformation from tadpole to frog. This is an excellent place to explore and enjoy nature. Remember, this is a nature preserve so please only take pictures and leave only footprints.

The Bowling Green Community Center offers many opportunities for visitors and pass holders to exercise and stay fit. The center has a great workout facility with lockers, a lounge area, and two gymnasiums. There is an indoor track, a game area in the lobby, Kiwanis kids' clubhouse, and a multipurpose room. The center has many fitness programs for teens and adults, even expecting mothers, like zumba, yoga, Pilates, spinning and more. A schedule of fitness programs can be found here.
